Bowen therapy is a holistic method that works in harmony with the body's natural healing processes. Through delicate soft tissue stimulation, it helps the nervous system find balance—without pain, aggressive manipulation, or side effects.

How does it work?

Bowen therapy is based on the idea that the body has an innate ability to heal itself, provided it receives the right signal. The therapist performs specific, gentle moves on precise points of the body—targeting muscles, tendons, fascia, and nerves. These moves are not a massage and do not require deep pressure.

A key feature of the method is the pause. After each series of moves, the therapist steps away and leaves the room for a few minutes. This is intentional—it is in this stillness that the body "processes" the impulse and responds. The nervous system is activated, muscle tension is released, and blood and lymph circulation are improved.

Bowen therapy doesn't tell the body what to do. It reminds the body that it already knows how to heal itself.

The impact is both physical and neurological. Many patients report feeling warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation during the session—signs that the nervous system has entered a recovery mode.

What is a session like?

The session takes place on a massage table, with the patient remaining fully clothed. No oils or equipment are used. The therapist works with their hands, applying gentle moves in a specific sequence.

Duration:

45 - 75 minutes for adults, shorter for babies and children

Number of sessions:

Usually 3 to 5 sessions; chronic issues may require more

Interval

A minimum of 5-7 days is kept between sessions

Results are sometimes felt after the very first session, but for chronic or long-standing complaints, the effect is cumulative. It is important to follow the recommended interval between sessions so the body can complete its adaptation process.

Who is it for?

One of the greatest advantages of Bowen therapy is that it is extremely gentle. It is suitable for literally any age—from newborns to the elderly. It requires no effort from the patient and causes no pain. This is precisely why it is especially valuable for people for whom more intensive methods are unsuitable.

How does Bowen help babies?

The first months of life are a period of immense adaptation. Bowen therapy offers gentle support when a baby needs help—without medication or stress—for conditions such as:

• Colic and gas
• Constipation
• Teething
• Blocked tear duct
• Torticollis
• Low muscle tone
• Restlessness and irritability

How does it help older children?

For young patients, Bowen therapy acts gently yet effectively on a number of common childhood complaints, including:

• Bedwetting
• Sleep disorders
• Scoliosis

Does Bowen work for adults?

The scope of application for adults is extremely broad—from pain and neurological complaints to women's health and recovery.

• Sciatica and radiculitis
• Plexitis
• Herniated disc
• Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow

• Sciatica during pregnancy
• Support for breech presentation
• Nasal congestion

For nursing mothers and postpartum women

The postpartum period requires special care. Bowen therapy supports recovery—both physically and emotionally.

• Lactation issues
• Mastitis
• Urinary incontinence
• Hemorrhoids
• Recovery after a C-section

The history behind the method

Bowen therapy was developed by the Australian Tom Bowen (1916–1982) in Geelong, Australia. Bowen was self-taught—he never formally studied medicine or physiotherapy, but he possessed an extraordinary intuition for the human body.

Today, Bowen therapy is practiced in over 30 countries and is recognized as a complementary therapeutic method in many of them.

Bowen therapy does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment. It works to support the body by reminding it of its own capacity for balance and health.
